Clinical SignificanceThe ICT detects antibodies in the patient’s serum that are capable of attacking red blood cells (RBCs). These ‘unbound’ antibodies can be clinically significant during pregnancy, as they may cross the placenta and cause hemolytic disease of the newborn. It is also critical before blood transfusions to ensure that the patient’s body will not reject the donor’s blood.
When is this test recommended?
During Pregnancy: As a routine screening during the first trimester and sometimes at 28 weeks for Rh-negative mothers to check for Rh incompatibility with the fetus.
Pre-Transfusion: To check for potential reactions between the recipient’s serum and the donor’s red blood cells.
To Diagnose Hemolytic Anemia: To help determine if the immune system is destroying red blood cells prematurely.
Sample Requirements A whole blood sample (approximately 3ml to 5ml) is collected in a standard EDTA (lavender-top) or Serum Separator (yellow-top) tube.
PreparationNo special preparation or fasting is typically required for this test.
