Anti-Aspergillus Fumigatus IgE Antibody (Specific IgE) Test
The Aspergillus Fumigatus IgE test is a blood assay used to detect specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. This test is primarily used to help diagnose allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), allergic fungal sinusitis, or severe asthma with fungal sensitization (SAFS).
This test measures the concentration of allergen-specific IgE antibodies directed against Aspergillus fumigatus in the serum. While small amounts of IgE are normal, significantly elevated levels indicate an allergic sensitization or an active allergic response to this common environmental fungus. This is crucial for managing patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis who develop worsening pulmonary symptoms, as Aspergillus exposure can cause severe, inflammatory lung disease. The test helps differentiate between straightforward asthma and complications like Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA), which requires different treatment, often involving corticosteroids and antifungal medications.
