Description
Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is a crucial protein found on the surface of several major lipoproteins, including Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad” cholesterol) and Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL). Unlike a standard lipid panel, which measures the amount of cholesterol carried, measuring ApoB provides a more precise count of the total number of atherogenic (plaque-forming) particles in the bloodstream, because every single one of these particles contains exactly one ApoB molecule.
This test is highly valuable for cardiovascular risk assessment, especially when standard LDL-C measurements might be misleading.
Diagnostic Use Cases
- Precise Risk Stratification: ApoB measurements can offer a more accurate estimation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk than LDL-C, particularly in individuals with high triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, or obesity. A person might have normal-looking LDL-C but still have a high number of dangerous, small dense LDL particles—which this test reveals.
- Atherogenic Particle Counting: Each ApoB molecule corresponds to one dangerous, plaque-building particle.
- Guiding Therapy: ApoB levels are often used as a secondary target of therapy for lipid-lowering treatments (such as statins), especially when patients are at high CVD risk.
