What is the Beta 2 Microglobulin 24-Hour Urine Test?
Beta-2 Microglobulin (B2M) is a small protein found on the surface of almost all cells in the body. It is constantly shed into the bloodstream and filtered by the kidneys. In a healthy individual, the renal tubules reabsorb nearly all the B2M, leaving very little to be excreted in the urine.
When the renal tubules are damaged or diseased, they lose the ability to reabsorb this protein, causing B2M levels in the urine to rise significantly. Collecting urine over a full 24-hour period provides a highly accurate, quantitative measurement that neutralizes the natural fluctuations in protein excretion that occur throughout the day.
